What the book's about: The War of Art is about creating. It chronicles the barriers to creativity in order to help you do as it's subtitle suggests and "break through the blocks & win your inner creative battles."
Why I read this book: I read this book as part of an online writing class I'm currently taking, Story 101, taught by Elora Rameriz.
My favorite quotes from the book:
- "Casting yourself as a victim is the antithesis of doing your work."
- "The more scared we are of a work or calling, the more sure we can be that we have to do it."
- "The professional tackles the project that will make him stretch."
- "Nothing is as empowering as real-world validation, even if it's failure."
- "All creative endeavor is holy."
- "We must do our work for its own sake, not for fortune or attention or applause... Do it as an offering to God."
Thumbs up or thumbs down? Thumbs up.
Who I'd recommend this book for: Having heard good things about this book from a number of people, I expected to be able to wholeheartedly recommend it for creatives (which I do). What I didn't expect was the way in which this book would also affirm and challenge my call as a youth worker. For that reason, I'd also recommend it to those in ministry.
